Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized with the increased blood glucose above normal due to insulin deficiency produced by pancreatic gland within the body. In a previous study (Yayuk, 2003) gave the alcohol extract of beans at a dose of 300 mg / BB in alloxan-induced diabetic mice and shown to lower the blood sugar levels of 57.7%. Glibenklamid is an oral anti-diabetic agent that can lower the blood glucose level. This study aimed to find out the effect of stringbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) fruit ethanol extract and glibenklamid combination administration on the Balb/C male mice induced with alloxan to be hyperglycemic. The mice were divided into six treatment groups, each of which consisted of 5 mice. The first group was given CMC 0.5% as negative control, the second was given stringbean extract at dose 42 mg/20 g BW mice, the third was given ,013 mg/20 g BW, the fourth, fifth and sixth were given the combination of stringbean fruit extract and glibenklamid at doses 31.5 mg: 0,00325 mg (75%: 25%), 21 mg : 0,0065 mg (50% : 50%) , and 10,.5 mg : 0,00975mg (25% : 75% ). All of groups were induced with alloxane on the day-0 (after fasted for 16 hours) intraperitoneally. The examination of blood sugar level was conducted on the day3, -6, and -9. The result of statistic analysis on string fruit extract ethanol and glibenklamid combination showed a significant difference, so that the combination of stringbean fruit infuse at dose 31.5 mg: Glibenklamid 0,00325 mg (75%:25%) was the most effective one in lowering the blood glucose level in Balb/C white male mice that were made hyperglycemic with alloxane induction.
