Abstract
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L) is a plant utilized as a traditional medicine containing flavonoid, polyphenol, saponin and tannin compounds. This research aimed to find out the activity of mangosteen peel 70% ethanol extract on the total bilirubin level of izoniazid- and rifampicin-induced rat serums. The method conducted was maceration using ethanol 70% solvent. This study employed 30 white rats divided into 5 groups, each of which consisted of 6 rats. Group I, as negative control, was given CMC 1%. Group II, as positive control, was given methicol® at 12.6 mg/200 g BW dose. Group III, IV, V, as treatment groups, were given mangosteen peel ethanol extract at doses 90 mg/200 g BW, 180 mg/200 g BW, and 216 mg/200 g BW. All treatment groups were induced with isoniazid and rifampicin daily at dose 10 mg/200 g BW for successive 28 days. The blood sample for determining the total bilirubin level of serum was taken on the day before treatment (T0) and after treatment (T28). The result of research showed that all treatment groups of mangosteen peel ethanol extract had activities in inhibiting the increasing total bilirubin level due to isoniazid and rifampicin induction. The most effective dose of mangosteen peel ethanol extract administration as the inhibitor of increasing total bilirubin level in the serum was 216 mg/200 g BW.
