Abstract

Atherosclerosis is an etiology of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Increasing LDL and decreasing HDL cause a state of hyperlipidemia. Bay leaves contain flavonoids as an antioxidant. This study aimed to determine influence combination of ethanolic extract of bay leaves and niacin on LDL and HDL levels in male rats and to determine the dose combination are most effective to decrease LDL levels and increase HDL levels. This study used 30 male rats were divided into 6 groups. Bay leaves extracts obtained by maceration using ethanol 70%. Group I (CMC 0,5 %), Group II (niacin), Group III (bay leaves extract 180 mg/g rats BW), Group IV (bay leaves extract 90 mg/g rats BW and niacin 27 mg/g rats BW), Group V (bay leaves extract 135 mg/g rats BW and niacin 13,5 mg/g rats BW), Group VI (bay leaves extract 45 mg/g rats BW and niacin 40,5 mg/g rats BW). Analyzed by Kolmogorof Smirnov test, one-way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Test. The results showed that bay leaves extract, combination I, combination II, combination III can lower LDL levels and raise HDL levels were significantly (p < 0,05). Combination dose of ethanol extract of bay leaves 90 mg/g rats BW and niacin 27 mg/g BW (50:50) most effectively lower LDL levels and raise HDL levels. Keyword : bay leaves, niacin, LDL, HDL
