Abstract
Leaves yakon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a medicinal plant useful as antidiabetic. Yakon leaves contain flavonoids that act as antioxidants and have αglucosidase inhibiting activity. Acarbose is an antidiabetic drug that inhibits the activity of enzymes α-glucosidase in order to keep blood sugar low. This research aims to determine the effect of a combination of 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakon-acarbose to decrease blood glucose levels of male mice Balb/C hyperglycemia. Method of determination of blood glucose levels used is alloxan diabetes test. Test animals were divided into 6 groups, each group consisted of 5 animals. Group I control diabetes CMC 0.5%, group II control synthetic insulin, group III acarbose, group IV 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakon, group V combination of 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakon-acarbose (100%:100%), group VI combination of 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakon-acarbose (50%:50%). Provision of test solutions conducted over 14 days after induction of alloxan and measurements were performed on days 7 and 14, then performed a statistical test with one way analysis of variance with a level of 95% and then continued Post Hoc Test. The results showed that 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakon give effect to a decrease in blood glucose levels when compared with the same synthetic insulin and combination of 70% ethanol extract of the leaves yakonacarbose (50%: 50%) more effective in lowering blood glucose levels than the single dosage.
