Abstract

Indonesia is known by its diversity of flora that has potential as medicinal plant, one of which is the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn). In this study, mangosteen rind explored its use as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The purpose of this study was to determine the n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water fraction from ethanolic maserate of mangosteen rind has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and which fraction is the most active at killing the Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. Mangosteen rind powder as 300 g macerated in 2250 ml of 70% ethanol while mixed occasionally for 5 days, then filtered, filtrate which obtained was concentrated by Rotary evaporator at 40 °C to a constant weight. Fractioned with n-heksan, ethyl acetate, and water. Test of antibacterial activity using the diffusion method for determining the diameter of the inhibitory area. The data obtained then tested statistically by one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the ethanolic extract of mangosteen rind (Garcinia mangostana Linn), of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water fraction had antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Ethyl acetate fraction was the most active fraction with an average of inhibition diameter at concentrations of 50% was 38.67 mm, concentration of 25% was 37.67 mm, and concentration 12.5% was 37.33 mm, so at the consentration of 12,5% had already used as antibacteria.
