Abstract

Alisin in garlic is one of the powerful inhibitor of platelet release and antiaggregation. Alisin can cause membrane hyperpolarization through opening of K+ ion channels which in turn will close Ca2+ channels so that Ca2+ intraseluser decreased and resulted in decreased platelet aggregation (Siegal et.al 1994). This study was aimed to determine the effect and effective dose in bleeding time and blood clotting time extention. Male onions that was used as the test material, were from water ectracts dried with freeze-dried methods. In this study, the test of animals were grouped into 5 test groups and each group consisted of 5 white male rats, i.e. : group I male onions 9 mg/200 gBW dose, group II male onions 18 mg/200 gBW dose, group III male onions 36 mg/200 gBW dose, group IV (positive control) acetosal 3.7 mg/200 gBW dose , group V (negative control) was aquadest. This study was conducted by observing the bleeding time and blood clotting time in white rats and then recorded before and after the treatment. The study results showed that the male onion given orally could increase bleeding time and blood clotting on white male rats. Male onion with a 36 mg/200 gBW dose was the most effective dose to increase bleeding time and blood clotting than the other doses with the ability to increase the bleeding time of 130 per seconds and 127.6 per seconds for blood clotting. Keywords: acetosal, male onion, bleeding time, clotting time.
