Abstract

Garlic (Allium schoenoprasum L.) tuber is one of plant usually used as antibacterial agent. The main compounds contained in garlic include allicin, flavonoid, saponin and volatile oil. This research aims to find out the antibacterial activity of garlic’s maceration and soxhletation extracts on Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361 using dilution methods. The extraction of garlic tuber was conducted using maceration and soxhletation methods, with ethanol 70% as the solvent. Antibacterial activity test of garlic maceration and soxhletation extracts used dilution method at 25%; 12,5%; 6,25%; 3,13%; 1,57%; 0,79%; 0,40%; 0,20; 0,10%; 0,05%. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined based on turbidity whereas Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was determined based on subculturing the cup scratch. The result of research showed that garlic’s maceration and soxhletation extracts had antibacterial activity on Shigella dysenteriae ATCC 9361.Value of minimum inhibitory concentration Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) can not be determined. Minimum values of Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) maseration extract at a concentration 12,5% and soxhletation extract at a concentration 25%. The garlic tuber extract with maceration method was more effective that the one with soxhletation method as antibacterial agent. Keywords: Garlic tuber, Maceration and Soxhletation, Antibacterial, Shigella dysenteriae, dilution.
