Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with chronic hyperglycemia characteristic occurring due to insulin secretion disorder. Kelor (drumstick tree in English) (Moringa oleifera Lmk) is a tropical plant potential in medical area to cure diabetes mellitus disease, because it contains flavonoid, terpenoid, polyphenol, and saponin. This research aimed to find out anti-hyperglycemic effect of Kelor (Moringa oleifera Lmk) leaves dry extract preparation and to find out the effective dose in lowering blood glucose level in wistar strain rat. The method employed was aloxane test. About 25 tested animal were divided into 5 treatment groups: group I (CMC 0.5% ), group II (glibeclamide), group III (20 mg/200 g rat BW), group IV (40 mg/200 g rat BW), and group V(60 mg/200 g rat BW). All of groups were induced by aloxane intraperitoneally. The examination of blood glucose level was conducted on the day-3 after aloxane induction, on the days-7 and -14 after the administration of tested preparation The result of statistic analysis showed anti-hyperglycemic effect on the three variations of kelor leaves dry preparation (20 mg/200 g rat BW, 40 mg/200 g rat BW, 60 mg/200 g rat BW) on the days-7 and -14. Dose 20 mg/200 g rat BW gave the most optimal anti-hyperglycemic effect and this effect was close to glibenclamide’s effect.
