Abstract
Cinnamon is the ever green of tropical area, a member family Lauraceae. Literature review on cinnamon revealed that it mainly contains essential oils and important compounds like cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, cinnamic acid and cinnamate. Cinnamon has been shown anticancer activity in several types of cancer cell. The cancer cell culture such as T47D, HeLa and Hep G2 cells. This study aims to examine the cytotoxic activity of volatile oil of cinnamon stem bark to inhibit WiDr colon cancer cells activity. Volatile oil of cinnamon stem bark obtained by distillation water vapor. TLC used to measure it’s cynnamaldehyde contain and then Rf result is 0,76. Single treatment assay performed with MTT assay. Parameter single cytotoxic test is IC50.and its cytotoxic activity compare with Doxorubicin cytotoxic activity to evaluate. The result of this study indicated that volatile oil of cinnamon stem bark has cytotoxic effect on WiDr cell lines with IC50 13,70 µg/ml. The result of this study indicated that volatile oil of cinnamon stem bark potential to be developed as an anticancer especially in colorectal cancer. However, further research is needed to determine the selectivity on normal cell and its molecular mechanism. Keywords : cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii Ness ex. Bl.), doxorubicin, WiDr cell lines, cytotoxic.
