Abstract

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanni Nees ex Bl.) is a higher plants potentially produce essential oils with main content of sinamaldehid. Essential oil can be used as a sedative. The purpose of this study was to determine the sedative effects of cinnamon essential oil on male mice. Sedative effects testing was conducted using 25 male mice wich divided into 5 groups each consisting of 5 mice. The first group with administration of diazepam 0,0052 mg/ 20 g BW, the second group with administration of cinnamon essential oils 0,2 ml, the third group with administration of cinnamon essential oils 0,4 ml, the fourth group with administration of cinnamon essential oils 0,8 ml and the fifth group with administration of distilled water 0,4 ml. After 30 minutes were given phenobarbital intraperitoneally, then observed the sleep induction time and sleep duration of mice then analyzed by One Way Anova and LSD test. The result showed that the treatment group of cinnamon essential oil had sedative effect when compared with the control group and the administration of cinnamon essential oil at 0,8 ml dose given the best sedative effect.
