Abstract
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an amorphous, yellowish white inorganic compound in powder form. Zinc oxide is a more effective physical sunscreen than titanium oxide; its work mechanism is to rebound the light touching the skin; the nanoparticle of zinc oxide serves as cosmetics and anti-aging product having rapid absorbability, and better penetration and distribution, and better preparation appearance. This study aimed to prepare the sunscreen cream formula containing nanoparticle zinc oxide having effect of protecting the skin in vitro against UV light. The nanoparticle zinc oxide sunscreen cream was made in three formulas with the varying concentrations of zinc oxide: 5%, 10%, 15%, and the non- nanoparticle zinc oxide sunscreen cream was made in one formula. The cream produced was tested for its physical properties including organoleptics, viscosity, spreadability, viscosity shifting, and SPF value in vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometer made and tested for its physical properties for 3 weeks; the result of physical properties test for the cream obtained was analyzed statistically using Kolmogorov smirnov analysis followed by one-way and two-way anova tests and then SNK test with significance (p = 0.05). The result of research showed that the zinc oxide nanoparticle sunscreen cream had better texture and SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value than the nonnanoparticle one, while the formula of nanoparticle zinc oxide with 15% concentration had the highest SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value.
