Abstract

The escargot (Achatina fulica ferr.) mucus capsule is one of preparation forms made to facilitate the users as the inflammation-reducing medicine. Lactose is the filler widely used because it hardly reacts to any medicinal materials. Explotab® is the destructing material the expanding power of which is so substantial that can help the capsule’s process to breaking. This study was aimed to find out the proportion of lactose and explotab® to get the optimum formula that could provide the good physical quality of capsule, using Simplex Lattice Design. This study used five formulas, with dry granulation method. Each formula was made into escargot mucus capsule, then tested for the optimized parameter using Design Expert 8.0.6.1 including flowing time, water absorbability, and disintegration. The optimum formula was then validated by comparing the test response score including flowing time, water absorbability, and disintegration between the theoretical and experimental results using t-test at significance level of 95%. The result of t-test showed no difference of prediction and experimental result. The conclusion of the study was that using Simplex Lattice Design provided the optimum formula of 184.941 lactose and 15.059 explotab® and the capsule produced met the physical quality requirement.
