Abstract

Insulin resistance because of obesity is one of the causes of type 2 diabetes mellitus. One of the drugs commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes is metformin. “Talok” (Muntingia calabura L.) leaf is a plants that can be used to treat diabetes mellitus. This research aims to determine antidiabetic effect of combination of “Talok” leaves infuse and metformin in insulin resistance mice due to obesity. Animal models were induced by high fat diet for 4 weeks. Insulin resistance was tested with the insulin tolerance test with insulin injection of 0,75 U/kg bw intraperitoneally. Treatment was given for 9 days, the levels of blood glucose were examined in all treatment groups on the 0, 5th, and 9th day. The first group was treated with aquadestilata, the second group was treated with 0,52 ml/20 g bw metformin, the third group was treated with 0,25 ml/20 g bw “Talok” leaves infuse, The fourth, fifth, and sixth group group was treated with combination of infuse and metformin 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3. The obtained data were analyzed by one way ANOVA (significance at p<0,05). The results showed that all combinations of infuse and metformin were able to decrease blood glucose levels significantly and at 5th day all combinations of infuse and metformin have greater hypoglycemic activity than the metformin, on 9th day all combinations of infuse and metformin have comparable hypoglycemic activity to metformin.
