Abstract

Antioxidants may help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. On leaf cottonwoods (Ceiba petandra Gaertn) contained flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols and tannins. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the fraction n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water fractions of ethanolic extract of leaves of cottonwoods against radical DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2 pikrilhidrazil). Leaf cottonwoods that have been dried and pulverized and then extracted by the addition of 70% ethanol using the method of maceration for 5 days. The filtrate was concentrated using a vacuum evaporator, extracts obtained and preparations made by the fraction partitioned with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water. Fractions obtained were then tested using the DPPH antioxidant activity, positive control using routine. Antioxidant testing done by making serial dilutions 5 concentration by adding 4.0 ml of test solution (fractions) with 1.0 mL of 0.45 mM DPPH to obtain a final volume of 5.0 ml. Activity against DPPH radical was measured by a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 517 nm with a time of 30 minutes and the price is determined IC50. Results showed that the extract fractionation results ethanolic extract all ethanolic extracts have antioxidant activity with IC50 values, ethanolic extract 70.18 mg / ml, n-hexane fraction 161.31 ug / ml, the fraction of ethyl acetate 63.64 mg / ml, the fraction of water 142 , 02 ug / ml.
