Abstract

Anemia is a decrease of erythrocytes amount in the blood circulation or the amount of hemoglobin that is less than normal. The three main mechanisms of the body that cause anemia are excessive erythrocyte destruction, blood loss and decreased erythrocyte production. In 2013, the percentage of women of childbearing age who suffered from anemia aged 15-44 was 35.3%. Anemia can be classified based on erythrocyte morphology, ie ; hypochromic microcytic, normochromic and macrocytic normocytic. The morphology of erythrocytes can be observed by using a peripheral blood smear examination. The purpose of this study is to determine the morphological description of erythrocytes in women of childbearing age who were suffered from anemia. This study uses descriptive research methods. The population of this study consists of 136 D-IV female students health analysts and 41 samples with purposive sampling technique. Results based on the size and the color are normocromic normocytic with 38 samples (93%), hypochromic microcytic with 3 samples (7%), while cell morphology based on the biconcave round shape are 36 samplesn (82%) and those with deformity or poikilocytosis consisting of tear drop cell, target cell, ellipse, ovale with 5 samples which are 18%. Further, research is needed to determine the correlation of the erythrocyte index and smear blood supply in anemia. Keywords: Anemia, Women of childbearing age, Morphology of erythrocytes.
