Abstract
Shigellosis or bacillary dysentery is an acute inflammatory disease of the human digestive tract. One of the pathogenic bacteria that causes this disease is Shigella dysenteriae. Nowadays, people tend to use alternative natural ingredients as medicines. Some natural ingredients that have been believed to have quite good antibacterial activity are Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) and Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) which contain efficacious chemical compounds. The objective of this research is to examine the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract from the combination of Meniran leaves (Phyllanthus niruri L.) and Kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) on Shigella dysenteriae. This research used an ethanolic extract from the combination of Meniran leaves and Kenikir leaves made with 5 comparations, which are M1:0K, M2:1, M1:1K, M1:2K, M0:1K. Ethanolic extract was obtained through maceration using 96% alcohol. The concentration used was 50% with 3% DMSO dilution. This research uses diffusion method. The results of this research indicate that the ethanolic extract Meniran leaves and Kenikir leaves has antibacterial activity on Shigella dysenteriae. The antibacterial activity test on Shigella dysenteriae indicates that the most extensive diameter of the inhibition zone is the ratio of M1:0K with a diameter of 14.3 mm. The conclusion of this research is that the single Ethanolic extract of Meniran leaves has the most active antibacterial activity compared to Kenikir leaves and combination.
