Abstract

Cigarettes are one of the public health threats in the world that can cause death. Conventional cigarette chemicals can be divided into two major groups, namely the gas component (carbon monoxide, ammonia, hidrosianic acid, nitrogen oxide, and formaldehyde) while the solid component (tar, indole, nicotine, karbarzol, and cresol). Electronic cigarette is one of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that uses electricity from battery power to provide nicotine in the form of steam. Standard liquid products contain nicotine, propylene glycol, flavorings and water. Some studies suggest that smoking can affect hemoglobin levels and leukocyte counts. This study aims to determine the differences in hemoglobin levels and leukocyte counts in conventional smoker and electric smokers (vapor) men. This study uses observational analytic study design with a cross sectional approach. Using primary data with a sample of 30 conventional smokers and 30 electric smokers (vapor). This study was conducted from February to March 2019. Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro Wilk test for normality and ttest (Independent sample t-test), meaningful if p <0.05. The results this study showed that were significant differences in leukocyte count in conventional smokers and electric smokers (p <0.05), but there no significant differences in hemoglobin levels in conventional smokers and electric smokers (p> 0.05). Further research is needed by using a more representative sample size so that it can better represent the population picture.
