Abstract

Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) is a Fabaceae plant which has antibacterial activity. The chemical content of secang wood is flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and saponins. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity and test of secang wood ethanol extract (Caesalpinia sappan Linn) gel on the back skin of rabbits infected with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Antibacterial activity test of ethanol extract gel from secang (Caesalpinia sappan L.) wood against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 using diffusion method. The gelling agent concentration varied with the extract used for the diffusion method of 5%. The gelling agent variation concentration between carbopol and CMC-Na gel from the ethanol extract of secang wood used for the diffusion method of 1%:1.5%, 1.15%:1.25%, 1.25%:1.15%, 1.5%:1% and 1.75%: 0.75%. The best stability and physical quality of the secang wood ethanol extract gel are formula III of the 5 formulas. The diameter of the inhibition zone of the secang wood ethanol extract gel against Staphylococcus aureus was 13.5 mm; 15.08 mm; 15.58 mm; 15.41 mm; and 15.50 mm, the inhibition zone of secang wood extract 5% at 18.50 mm. The results of the recovery score on the rabbit's back showed healing on the 9th day of formula III. Secang wood ethanol extract on day 8, positive control on day 11 and negative control on day 13.
