Abstract

High prevalence of hypertension in Karanganyar causes serious health problems. Hypertension treatment in elderly patients cause drug use problems that can reduce effectiveness, increase side effects and drug interaction. The objective of this study was to identify drug interaction problems in elderly patients at Karanganyar Regional Public Hospital in 2018. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in geriatric hypertensive patients with quota sampling method and cross-sectional study design. Samples of this study were all the geriatric hypertensive patients with or without comorbidities, age ≥ 60 years old, and prescribed more than 2 drugs at Inpatient Care Unit Karanganyar Hospital in 2018. Drug interactions were analyze with Lexicomp Reference-Drug Interaction Checker. The results showed that drug interactions were found in 104 patients (86.7%) with a total of 350 occurrences of drug interactions. Based on the severity of the cases, 25 cases (7.1%) were major interactions, 237 cases (67.7%) were moderate, and 88 cases (25.1%) were minor. The interaction based on the mechanism found 140 cases (40%) with the pharmacokinetic mechanism and 210 cases (60%) with the pharmacodynamic mechanism.
