Abstract

Phytochemical studies revealed that the Morel berry herb (Physalis angulata L.) contains bioactive compound such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and several types of steroids. This plant is traditionally used as a medicine to treat hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive effects of ethanolic extract morel berry herb. Morel berry herb were extracted by maceration, followed by evaporating using rotary evaporator. Hypertension was induced by 200 mg/kg bw. NaCl and 1.5 mg/kg bw. prednisone orally, every day as long as 21 days, then continued over the next 28 days in the therapy period. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups which were captopril (2,5 mg/kg bw.), control group hypertensive, control normal, morel berry herb extract (MHE) (with doses of 50 mg/kg bw., 100 mg/kg bw., and 200 mg/kg bw.). Measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure was done every weeks using direct tail-cuff of with a non-invasive blood pressure analyzer CODA Instrumen®. MHE dose 50 mg/kg bw., 100 mg/kg bw., and 200 mg/kg bw. have antihypertensive activity in Sprague-Dawley rats induced by prednisone and NaCl. MHE dose 200 mg/kg bw. is the most effective dose in reducing blood pressure. Keyword: Physalis angulata L., Hypertension, Tail-cuff noninvasivemethod, Blood pressure.
