Abstract

Dental caries caused by the overgrowth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. One of prevention action to control dental caries is by using anti-bacterial mouthwash. Green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.) contain catechins and flavonoids that can prevent bacteria growth. This research aims to know the potention of green tea leaves extract mouthwash as anti-bacterial against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The method used in this research is maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent. Green tea leaves extract with vary concentrations such as 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% are made in the form of mouthwash preparations with sorbitol, tween 80, glicerol, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and oleum menthae as constituent materials. The mouthwash is tested by Physical quality test (organoleptic, pH, viscosity) and stability test. Anti-bacteria activity tested by using diffusion method with discs. Four green tea extract formulas created good results on physical quality test and stability test, then were statisticaly analyzed by using Independent T-Test. Diffusion test results of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% mouthwash concentrations by measuring clear zones using caliper obtained 12,92 mm, 14,83 mm, 17,25 mm, and 18,67 mm inhibition areas. Diffusion test results of green tea extract mouthwash were statisticaly analyzed by using one way anova. Green tea extract mouthwash with 3% concentration can actively kills Streptococcus mutans bacteria ATCC 25175. Key word : Dental caries, green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.), Streptococcus mutans, diffusion.
