Abstract

Endophyte bacterium is the one living in plant tissue and mutualism symbiosis with its host. Endophyte bacterium potentially serves as bioactive compound (secondary metabolite) source. Some students showed that endophyte bacteria isolated from drug plant has antibacterial activity. Taro plant (Colocasia esculenta L.) is medicinal plants and having advantages antibacterial. This research aimed to find out antibacterial activity of endophyte bacterial isolate of taro tubber in inhibiting Escherichia coli bacterium ATCC 25922. The research was conducted in some stages: identifying tested bacteria, identifying endophyte bacteria, endophyte bacteria fermentation and antibacterial activity test using discus diffusion method. This research employed several treatment groups: ciprofloxacin as positive control, sterile Brain-Heart Infusion (BHI) media as negative control and endophyte bacteria fermented for 7 days. The data obtained was analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Two Way ANOVA method. The result of research showed that endophyte bacterium of taro tubber has antibacterial activity on Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 with optimum fermentation time on day 2 with inhibition of 11.83 mm by endophyte bacterium Pseudomonas knackmussii and day-5 with inhibition 10,89 by endophyte bacterium Bacillus siamensis, also endophyte bacteria Pseudomonas knackmussii has greater antibacterial activity potential than edophyte bacteria Bacillus siamensis.
