Abstract

Memory reduction is caused by oxidative stress. Pegagan (Centella asiatica L.) herb contains terpenoid active compounds which are thought to be able to improve memory because it is believed to be able to regenerate damaged neuron cells due to free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of pegagan extract and fraction (Centella asiatica L.) on improving memory. This study included extraction of pegagan herb using maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent and fractionation with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water solvents. Memory enhancement activity test extracts and fractions of pegagan herbs were carried out by the eight arm radial maze method. Test animals were divided into 6 test groups, each group consisted of 5 mice, positive control, negative control, extract group, water fraction group, ethyl acetate fraction group, n-hexane fraction group. Mice were tested for maze during the 7-day training stage, the induction stage of Plumbum acetate 7 days, and the treatment stage of the test preparation 7 days later observed percent memory. Statistical analysis of memory percent data using two way ANOVA then followed a post hoc tukey test to determine whether there were significant differences between the test groups. The results of the increase in memory recall of extracts and fractions of pegagan herbs showed the highest activity of the ethyl acetate fraction group of 37.53% exceeding the positive control of ginkgo biloba at 31.54%.
