Abstract

Cardamom (Amomum cardamomum) contains of activities antibacterial essential oils such as 1,8-cineol, citronellol, β-pinene, linalol, γ-terpinen and αterpineol (Ghalem and Mohamed 2012). Based on its activity, cardamom essential oils have potential to be developed a formulation of pharmaceutical preparations to improve the ability and prevent volatility of essential oils so that it has an optimal effect. The purpose of this study was to formulate essential oils of cardamom fruit in the form of mouthwash and antibacterial for Streptococcus mutans. The antibacterial activity of cardamom essential oil method dilution to determine the Minimum Killer Concentration (KBM) uses dilution series a 100%; 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25; 3.12%; 1.56%; 0.781%. The formulation of mouthwash was made with variations in the concentration of tween 80 and PEG 400 by mixing all the ingredients using a magnetic stirrer and then homogenizing it with a sonicator. Mouthwash were tested for physical quality and stability and antibacterial activity tests with diffusion methods. Analysis of results of data using SPSS. The results of the Minimum Killer Concentration (KBM) of the cardamom essential oil were 3.125%. The formulations of cardamom mouthwash for varying concentrations of 80 and PEG 400 (8: 1) and (4: 2) have safe and stable physical supply during centrifugation and cycling tests. The antibacterial activity of the cardamom essential oil mouthwash according to F1; F2; F3 is 19.3mm; 19.7mm; 16.7mm.
