Abstract

Acne inflammation is triggered by Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Acne treatment can use antibiotics to inhibit inflammation and use natural material to minimize the side and resistant effect of antibiotic use. The objective of research was to find out antibacterial activity of Kaffir lime and basil leaves essential oil on Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228. The methods employed in this study were diffusion and dilution. The concentrations used in diffusion are 8%, 4%, and 2%, with the following ratios of Kaffir lime and basil leaves combination: 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 1:3, 3:1. The most effective result undertook dilution test to find out Minimum Killing Concentration (MKC) using varying concentrations: 8%; 4%; 2%; 1%; 0,5%; 0,25%; 0,13%; 0,06%; 0,03%; 0,02%. The data obtained was then processed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical analysis with a two-path method to find out whether or not there is a significant difference. The result of diffusion test showed that the most active combination of Kaffir lime and basil leaves was found in the one with ratio of 1:3 with inhibiting diameter of 15,25 mm. The result of dilution showed that the Minimum Killing Concentration was found at 1% concentration. Considering the result of activity test conducted, it can be seen that the combination of Kaffir lime and basil leaves essential oil could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 bacterium. Keywords: Antibacterial, essential oil combination, basil leaves essential oil, Kaffir lime leaves essential oil, Staphylococcus epidermidis.
