Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where there is an increase in total blood cholesterol levels to exceed the normal limit. Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomea batatas L.) have benefits to overcome hypercholesterolemia. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of giving ethanol extract and purple sweet potato leaf fraction on antihypercholesterolemic activity and to find out the fraction of sweet potato leaves which had antihypercholesterolemic activity which was equivalent to simvastatin positive control. The method used to obtain the extract was maceration with 70% ethanol and continued using the fractionation method to obtain the purple sweet potato leaf fraction. The rats used were 30 animals which were divided into 6 treatment groups. Group I negative control, II control simvastatin, III extract of 300 mg / KgBB, IV n-hexane, V ethyl acetate and VI water. The rats were induced with 12.5 mg Propylthiouracil/ day and high-fat feed for 21 days, after which rats were given a test preparation for 14 days. Cholesterol levels were measured on the day 0, 21, 28 and 35. The cholesterol level determination method used was the CHOD-PAP method. The results showed that the extract and fraction of purple sweet potato leaves had antihypercholesterolemic activity, and the ethyl acetate fraction had antihypercholesterolemic activity which is equivalent to simvastatin.
