Abstract
Prostitute is a women who has sex to get money. In society, prostitutes are considered as a social deviation, so their existences are rejected by society. Women who work as prostitutes get many risks, such as police raid, sexually transmitted disease, and refusal from environtment. The new condition of job transition does not change the stigma of their social environment which can cause stress. Ex prostitutes who make efforts to encounter stress or coping, consist of emotion focused coping and problem focused coping. There are some coping phases which are passed by individual. The success level in coping stress determined by solved problem. The aims of this research are to understand about stress and coping stress which are experienced by ex prostitutes. This research used qualitativ method with phenomenological approach. Participants of this research were two ex prostitutes in Surakarta City. The data was collected by interview, observation, and documentation. The results of the research describe that every participants experienced stress when they stopped being prostitutes. The first participant only used emotion focused coping method by crying and isolation from others. The second participant used both of types of coping stress. She uses emotion focused coping by praying and keeping busy with her new job. Keywords: coping stress, ex prostitute.
