Abstract

Areca seeds is a native Indonesian plant that is utilized by traditional communities to treat various diseases.Compounds contained in areca seeds is flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. This research was conducted to determine the ethanolic extract, fraction activity n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water of areca seeds (Areca catechu L.) as antibacterial against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9361. Antibacterial activity ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and water fraction on Pseudomonas aerugiosa ATCC 27853 using diffusion and dilution method. The concentration used for the diffusion method is 50%; 25% and 12.5%. The most active fraction concentration used for the dilution method was 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.12%; 1.56%; 0.78%; 0.39%; 0.19%; 0.09%. The most active fractions were tested for chemical content by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The result of the research by diffusion method shows that ethyl acetate fraction is the most active fraction which can inhibit bacterial growth with 16.6 mm inhibition diameter at 25% concentration while Minimum Killable Concentration (KBM) of ethyl acetate fraction to Pseudomonas aerugiosa ATCC 27853 is 12,5%. The TLC identification results show that ethyl acetate fraction contains flavonoid and tanin compounds.
