Abstract

Basil leaves (Ocimum bacilicum L.) and kaffir lime leaves (Citrus hystrix D.C.) are essential oils which each contain linalool and citronella. The essential oil is reported have antibacterial activity to against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of essential oils of basil leaves combined with essential oils of kaffir lime leaves on the bacteria Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. The method used in this research is diffuse disc. Essential oils of basil leaves and citrus leaf are obtained by steam and water distillation. Essential oils then given emulsifier 1% tween 80 so that it can mix with the media which basically contains water. The test is done by makes some variant concentrations and comparisons to determine the inhibition effect to Streptococcus mutans bacteria ATCC 25175. The results showed that the essential oil sample in the singular form which had the best activity was in the 4% concentration of basil sample with inhibition zone 14.10 mm ± 1.829542. The most effective antibacterial activity in this study was in 1: 3 combination of 4% composition with inhibition zone diameter of 14.75 mm ± 1.632993.
