Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder or disease characterized by high blood glucose levels (hyperglicemia). Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel can be used as an alternative treatment to lower blood glucose levels because of the flavonoids content. This study was aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of red dragon fruit pell to decrease blood glucose levels and precentage of necrosis endocrine cells of Langerhans island in pancreatic organ of male rats that induced by alloxan. The test animals were divided into 6 groups, normal control, diabetes control, comparison control (glibenclamide), red dragon fruit peel extract dose 125 mg/kg BW, 250 mg/kg BW and 500 mg/kg BW. The treatment is given for 14 days, with measurment of blood glucose levels at 7 days and 14 days. On the 15th day of the test, the rats were sacrificed and the pancreas was prepared by histology. The result showed that the ethanolic extract of red dragon fruit peel dose 125 mg/kg BW, 250 mg/kg BW and 500 mg/kg BW can lower blood glucose levels and decreasing percentage of necrosis endorine cells of Langerhans island. The most effective dose in lowering blood glucose levels and percentage of necrosis endorine cells of Langerhans island is the dose of 500 mg/kg BW. Keywords: Red dragon fruit peel, alloxan, antidiabetic, pancreas necrosis.
