Abstract

Alpha mangostin is flavonoid compound belonging to flavonol category useful as antioxidant agent. Alpha mangostin low solubility and low watersolubility. Low solubility requires alpha mangostin to be developed in the form of topical preparation, phytosom, to improve drug penetration into skin. This research was aimed to find out the effect of phosphatidilcoline’s varying concentrations on phytosome alpha mangostin quality viewed from particle size, absorption efficiency and stability. This study was made five formulas containing alpha mangostin, phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol with a ratio of 1: 1: 0.2; 1: 2; 0.2; 1: 3: 0.2; 1: 4: 0.2; 1: 5: 0.2. The results of phytosome formula were tested, namely particle size, adsorption efficiency, and stability. The results of this study was known that alpha mangostin can be made phytosome preparations by thin-layer hydration-sonication method. Characterization of alpha mangostin produced average particle sizes in F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5 with values of 152.5; 148.8; 170.03; 167.80; 183.7nm. The biggest absorption efficiency in formulas 1 and 2 with 97.43% and 97.63% respectively. Stability test is only formula 2.
