Abstract

Breast cancer is the biggest cause of death in women due to cancer among various cancers. Binahong leaves (Anredera cardifolia (Ten.) Steenis) are used by the community as an alternative treatment. Binahong leaves are known to contain flavonoids which have potential as anticancer agents. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic activity and selectivity index of binahong leaves ethanol extract on T47D breast cancer cell line. Ethanol extract of binahong leaves was done by maceration method using 70% ethanol. The extract obtained was then evaporated until the extract becomes thick. Cytotoxic tests wes carried in conducted by MTT assay method with used series concentrations (1000; 500; 250; 125; 62.5; 31.2; 15.6) µg / mL for the IC50 score calculated trough linear regression. Selectivity index of extract obtained by comparing IC50 score of Vero cell to IC50 score of cancer cells. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of binahong leaves had less potential cytotoxic activity on T47D breast cancer cells with IC50 score 431,386 µg/mL, and has good cytotoxic selectivity with a selectivity index score 3,544.
