Abstract

Self-medication or self-medication is an action taken to overcome a symptom without using a doctor's prescription. Lack of knowledge can lead to drug abuse and failure of therapy due to improper medication handling. The purpose of this study was to find out an overview of parents' knowledge of cough swamedication and the effect of education on the level of self-medication for coughing. This research is descriptive by using one group pre-test / post-test study design. Sampling is done by non random sampling technique using purposive sampling method. The instrument of this study used questionnaires and brochures as an extension media. The Wilcoxon test is used to analyze data statistically. The research sample was the people who visited the Tuko Pharmacy in Grobogan Regency who were willing to be respondents in the questionnaire and fulfill the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of the study found a total sample of 167 respondents. The pre-test knowledge level is classified as lacking (7%), sufficient (50%), and good (43%). Providing education is able to increase the knowledge of respondents indicated by the results of respondents' knowledge indicated by the results of posttest knowledge classified as less (0%), sufficient (5%), and good (95%). Wilcoxon test analysis obtained p (0,000) and ½ p (0,000) <α (0.05), indicating that education can increase the knowledge of self-coughing respondents.
