Abstract

Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrical L) root has known to have a thrombolytic effect. Thrombolytic is a mechanism to break down blood clots. This study aimed to determine thrombolytic activity and optimal concentration of alang-alang root extract. Percentage of clot lysis and reduction of blood platelet count were used as parameters in this study. This study used six male rats which were divided into five groups as follow: negative control and ethanolic extract of the alang-alang root at concentration 2,5 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml, 10 mg/ml and 20 mg/ml. The data were tested for normality by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov. After the data were found not homogen and not normally distributed, the data were test by using Kruskall- Wallis. The results showed that alang-alang root ethanolic extract could lyse blood clots and reduced blood platelet count in male rats. Concentration of alang-alang root ethanolic extract that had thrombolytic activity were 2,5 ; 5 ; 10 ; 20 mg/ml.
