Abstract
Cardamom can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans causing dental caries because it contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols and essential oils. The aim of the study was to determine physical quality including homogeneity, organoleptic, viscosity, pH, dispersion area, foam height, and stability of cardamom fruit extract formulated in gel toothpaste preparations with variations of concentration carbopol 940 and glycerin and to find out the preparation of gel toothpaste fruit cardamom extract has antibacterial activity against bacteria Streptococcus mutans by diffusion method. Total preparation toothpaste gel is made of eight consists of four formula as a control and four formula with extracts. Cardamom extract at a concentration of 1% formulated into toothpaste gel with variations in the concentration of carbopol 940 and glycerin in a row (0,5:2), (1:1,5), (1,5:1) and (2:0,5). Preparations gel toothpastes evaluated physical properties include homogeneity, organoleptic, viscosity, pH, wide dispersive power, high foam for 21 days and test the antibacterial activity by diffusion method. The test results of viscosity, pH, extensive high dispersive power and foam was analyzed by paired samples t-test, while the antibacterial activity test was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The results showed that the increase in the concentration of carbopol 940 and decreasing the concentration of glycerin will reduce the size of the spread and the foam height but increases the viscosity and vice versa. The higher concentration of the extract is added, the lower the pH of the formula. The inhibition of bacteria contained in the gel toothpaste cardamom extracts with varying concentrations and glycerin are carbopol 940 (2:0,5).
