Abstract

The most widely used cosmetic product, especially by women is powder. The use of cosmetics sometimes cause side effects, such as irritation, contact urticaria, contact dermatitis allergy, photosensitization, pigmentation abnormalities, acneiform eruptions, folliculitis, and worsening of dermatoses which has existed before. This research aimed to investigate whether the compact powder used fulfill the standard of microbiological requirement and to determine the difference of compact powder used by consumer with acnes and without acnes. Bacteriological examination of compact powder samples consist of Total Plate Count (TPC) using Sodium Agar media, Yeast Fungus Score (YFS) using Dicloran Rose Bengoul Chloramphenicol (DRBC) media, Staphylococcus aureus identification using Vogel Johnson Agar (VJA) media, followed by Gram stain, catalase test and coagulase test, Pseudomonas aeruginosa identification using Pseudomonas Selective Agar (PSA), if suspected colony of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found, biochemical test and identification of Candida albicans can be conducted. The results of study determined differences of compact powder used by consumers with acnes and without acnes. Three samples of compact powder used by consumers without acnes fulfill the microbiological requirements of BPOM. Three samples of compact powder used by consumers with acnes did not fulfill the microbiological requirements of BPOM. Key Words: Compact Powder, Microbiological test, BPOM
