Abstract

Herbal medicine is a traditional medicine that comes from natural ingredients that exist from nature in the form of plants. Red shoots have been shown to have activities, namely the content of flavonoids which are considered to have an important role in the prevention of diabetes and its complications, anticancer, antibacterial, and antioxidants. Flavonoids are compounds consisting of 15 carbon atoms which are generally spread in the plant world. The purpose of this study was to determine total flavonoid contents of young and old leaves of wild cinnamon (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.). To know the difference significantly in red shoots. Sample preparation was carried out by means of plant determination, material collection, preparation of simplicia powder, determination of moisture content, making of young and old leaves extract of wild cinnamon with 96% ethanol solvent, identification of flavonoids by paper chromatography using the mobile phase n-butanol: acetic acid: water (4: 1: 5). Determination of total flavonoid content was carried out with AlCl3 reagent and absorbance was read in UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 424 nm. The total flavonoid content were analized by ANOVA test. The results of the study showed that total flavonoid contents in young and old leaves simplicia were respectively (0,12% ± 0,0153) and (0,19% ± 0,0173), while young and old leaves extract were (0,74% ± 0,0115) and (0,70% ± 0,0681). Based on ANOVA test, the total flavonoid of young and old leaves were not different significantly. Keywords: Total Flavonoids, Red Shoot Leaves (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp), UV-Vis spectrophotometry
