Abstract

Red lip (Syzygium Myrtifolium Walp., Myrtaceae family) is an ornamental plant that is popular in Indonesia so that its existence easily found on the edge of the road and in the yard. Red lip which is one Myrtaceae family contains essential oils. The purpose of this study was to analyze the components of chemical compounds in essential oils and to compare the physical and chemical properties of essential oils of pink and old shoots. Isolation of essential oils of pink and old shoots is done by the method of water distillation with clavenger pipes. Physochemical characteristic analyzes were performed including organoleptic tests including color, shape, taste and aroma, solubility test, refractive index, TLC and GC-MS. The results showed that the essential oil characteristics of young leaves was 0.33% and old leaves was 0.15%. The essential oil produced was yellow, insoluble in 96% ethanol. The essential oil of young leaves smelled more typical as the plant origin and durable than old leaves. The refractive index of young leaves oil was 1,485, while the old leaves oil was 1.4915. The essential oil of red lip leaves did not contained eugenol. The main compound component of red lip leaves of GC-MS was trans-caryophyllene with 18,04% old and 18,01% young leaves.
