Abstract
Oral diseases such as dental caries are caused by bacteria, one of which is the bacterium Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. These bacteria will form a biofilm layer and cause resistance to antibiotics. Red shoots (Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.) Contain flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, triterpenoids, saponins and have antibacterial activity and can inhibit the formation of biofilms. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of extracts and essential oils of young red shoots leaves as an inhibitor of biofilm formation against S. mutans ATCC 25175. Extracts of maceration results with 96% ethanol solvent from young shoots of red shoots and essential oils obtained from water vapor distillation, a dilution series of 20, 40 and 60% was carried out. Inhibition test in the formation of biofilms using the microtitter plate biofilm assay method with ELISA reader. OD (Optical Density) obtained is calculated browser percent and data analysis using SPSS version 21. The results obtained indicate that essential oils and extracts have inhibition of biofilm formation. Essential oils have greater inhibition of biofilm formation compared to extracts. The IC50 value of extract was 129,4 mg / ml while the essential oil was 0,17 mg / ml, the IC50 yield was greater than the essential oil, so the essential oil was better than the extract.
