Abstract

Self-medication behavior defined of using modern and traditional medicine for self-care without consulting a doctor for diagnosis, prescription or medication supervision. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of doctor's examination time, medical costs, and knowledge about drugs on self-medication behavior, testing the role of moderation in health education background in the relationship between doctor's examination time, medical costs, and knowledge of medication and self-medication behavior. This research was a survey designed. The main data sources and information were obtained from the respondents as research samples using questionnaire as data collection instrument. The samples on this research were health science students of Setia Budi Surakarta University. Sample determination was performed using factor loading. The scale used on the questionnaire was Likert Scale 5 points. Instrument testing was performed using validity and reliability test. Data analysis was performed by double regression analysis and moderation regression analysis. The study result shows that the duration of the physician visitation has a significant impact towards a self-medication (p= 0,038), medication cost has no significant impact towards self-medication (p= 0,264), knowledge of the medicines has significant impact towards self-medication act (p= 0,039). Health education background does not moderate (does not strengthen) the relationship between doctor's examination time and self-medication behavior p= 0.466. The health education background did not moderate (did not strengthen) the relationship between medical costs and self-medication behavior p= 0.372.
