Abstract
Cervical cancer is one the second leading cause of death of women in Indonesia after breast cancer. Cancer is the growth of body cells that are not controlled or abnormal. Basil herbs (Ocimum basilicum L) are widely used as an alternative to cancer treatment. It have to do study the cytotoxic effects of basil effect on heLa cells and Vero cells were investigated for their potency as anticancer. The purpose of this research is to know the value of Basil's herbal IC50 against HeLa cells and Vero cells and to know the chemical group compounds potentially as anticancer. Basil herb extraction was done by maceration then liquid-liquid fractionation with n-hexane solvent and characteristatic of simplicia as quality control. The n-hexane fractions were tested for their effect on HeLa cells and Vero cells using the MTT method with various series of 500 μg / mL; 250 μg / mL; 125 μg / mL; 62.5; μg/mL, 31.25 μg/mL; 15.625 μg/mL. Cisplastin is used as a positive control and control cell is used as a negative control. The results of this study are known n-hexane fraction containing triterpenoid compounds, steroids, essential oils and flavonoids. The result of cytotoxic activity of n-hexane fraction of basil on HeLa cells showed IC50 value 120.55 μg / mL and Vero 1515.43μg / mL with selectivity index of 12.57. This proves that the histopathic n-hexane fraction has an effect as a chemoprefentive agent against cervical cancer cells.
