Abstract

The leaves of matoa (Pometia pinnata J.R & G. Forst) is one of the nutritious plants as antihypertensive. The previous study has a LD50 >5000 mg/kgbw in acute toxicity. This study was to know effect of Subchronic toxicity towards toxic symptoms such as urine volume, biochemical parameters include Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and creatinin level, also kidney histopathology in rats. The leaves of matoa was extracted by maceration method, followed by evaporation using rotary evaporator. male and female Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups i.e. control CMC Na 0,5%, matoa leaves extract (with doses of 150 mg/kgbw, 500 mg/kgbw, and 1000 mg/kgbw), and control satellite (doses 1000 mg/kgbw) given matoa leaf extract for 90 days and added 28 days in the satellite group to see the reversible effect. BUN and creatinine serum were examined at the beginning and end of the study. At the end of the experimental animal studies were sacrificed for histopathological tests The results of ethanol extract of matoa leaves on 90 day subcronic toxicity test did not affect the volume of urine, blood biochemistry and macropathological changes in renal organs but did influence renal histopathological changes at doses of 150, 500 and 1000mg / kgbw. Keywords: Matoa leaf extract (Pometia pinnata J.R & G. Forst), subchronic toxicity, renal biochemistry, histipatology
