Abstract

Serum is a preparation with a concentration of more active subtances and low viscosity can release active substances properly. Gelling agent is one factor that affect the physical quality of the preparation. Xanthan gum has stable properties that are not affected by temperature and pH. The purporse of this research is to make serum preparations from ethanol extract of katuk leaf with variation concentration of xanthan gum as a gelling agent as a gelling agent. Katuk leaf obtained by maceration method using ethanol 96%. Serum preparation made into four formulas with variations concentration of xanthan gum 0,5%, 0,75%, and 1% plus one negative control formula. Observation of physical stability including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, dispersal, adhesion and stability. Observing hair fertilizing activity by obsersing the length, weight, and acceleration of hair growth. Observation data were analyzed with One Way Anova statistics. The results showed that all formulas had good physical quality and stability. Variation concentration xantan gum affect the viscosity serum. Viscosity affects the release of active subtance thereby affecting the pharmacological activity of the active substance. Formula with xantan gum 0,75% had best results of hair growth activity.
