Abstract
Okra seeds (Abelmochus esculentus L. Moench) are one part of the okra fruit which is used as a natural antidiabetic because it has the composition of flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids (Sabithaet al 2013). Hyperglicemia is a health disorder in the form of the collection of symptom caused by increase blood sugar level due to deficiency or insulin resistance (Bustan 2015). The aim of this study was to investigate the antihyperglycemic activity of ethanol extract, the fractions of okra seeds,to determine the highestactivity of thefraction and to know the class of active compounds from ethanol extract, the fractions of okra seeds which at as antihyperglycemic. This study used 35 male Wistar rats which were divided into 7 groups, consisting of normal control, hyperglycemia control, control drug of 0.09 mg / kg bw, okra seed extract dose of 200 mg / kg bw, n-hexane fraction of 76.90 mg / kg bw, the ethyl acetate fraction dose 18.99 mg / kg bw, and the water fraction dose 104.49 mg/kg bw. All groups were given test preparations for 21 days. Measurement of blood sugar levels using a Glucometer (GlucoDr Biosensor AGM-2199) on day 0, day 4 after induction, day 7, day 14, and day 21. Ethanol extract, fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water of okra seeds have antihyperglycemic activity in male Wistar-induced strain of rats. Extract and water fraction showed the highest antihyperglycemic activity and comparable to Glibenclamide. The active compound contained in the extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and positive okra seed water fraction contain flavonoids, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids.
