Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Lactobacillus acidophilus are Gram positive bacteria and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Porphyromonas gingivalis are Gram negative bacteria. Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) contain compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and trigonellins which have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory properties of extracts and fractions from robusta coffee beans on the growth of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and to find out the most effective fractions. This study used a combination of laboratory experimental studies with literature studies from various journals. Laboratory experimental studies were carried out until the identification process of the extract and fraction compounds. The method used to review journals is Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Parameters used in the experimental study include specific parameters (organoleptic and identification of compounds in the robusta coffee powder and extract), and non-specific parameters (moisture test, drying loss test, and ethanol free test on powder and robusta coffee bean extract) . Meanwhile, the parameter for literature study is the inhibition zone that is formed around the disc and well. Testing for antibacterial activity in the literature uses the disc diffusion method and the well and the dilution method. Robusta coffee bean (Coffea canephora) powder and extract are known to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. And the results obtained from literature studies show that extracts and fractions of robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) have antibacterial activity. The most active fraction of robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) that can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria is the methanol fraction. Key words : Antibacterial, Coffea canephora, Fraction, Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria.
