Abstract

Memory is ability to remember and store information. Symptoms of memory loss are dementia to the worst conditions causing Alzheimer's. This decrease because the amount of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is unstable and damage to the pyramidal cells in the hippocampus area by several factors. Beans are thought to have activity in improving memory. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving ethanol extracts of beans (EEB), determine the effective dose of EEB, and determine the histopathological of the hippocampus in the rat brain. Beans are made into a powder and extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol. Tests were carried out on 25 rats divided into 5 treatment groups are positive (Ginkgo biloba), negative (Na-CMC 1%), EEB dose 100; 200; and 400 mg/kgBW. Test uses Morris Water Maze method and latency time data is analyzed using Anova one-way (p<0.05) and histopathological on rat brain organs analyzed by qualitative method. Identification of compounds from bean powder and EEB containing flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids, and saponins. The results showed EEB dose of 100; 200; and 400 mg/KgBW has the activity to improve memory. Dose of 400 mg/KgBW shows effective enhancement activity and histopathological of the hippocampus show a good number of pyramidal cells approaching Ginkgo biloba.
