Abstract

Acne is a skin problem that occurs when hair follicles or hair growth areas become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This study aims to determine the formulation of anti-acne gel preparations from bay leaf extract and its activity against acne-causing bacteria based on descriptive research. This research was conducted by extracting the bay leaf powder using the maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent, then analyzed the powder and extract, namely: determination of moisture content, drying losses and phytochemical screening, then continued with descriptive research using the library method. The library method is done by collecting journals that can answer the objectives of the research. The results of the descriptive research that have been conducted show that the bay leaf extract contains phenolic compounds, tannins, alkaloids, and flavonoids which have the activity of inhibiting acne-causing bacteria. Descriptive research shows that the dosage form has an effect on inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Bay leaf extract can be formulated into gel preparations and the selection of gelling agents can affect the anti-acne activity of gel preparations based on research.
