Abstract
Hyperpigmentation is a condition where the amount of melanin in the skin layer increases, which results in a darker skin color change. The prevalence of hyperpigmentation in Indonesia is high because Indonesian skin types are often exposed to sunlight. Hydroquinone is one of the bleaching agents used in the treatment of hyperpigmentation, but its long-term use causes side effects such as irritation, rebound phenomenon, exogenous ochronosis, and vitiligo. An alternative that can be used to reduce the unwanted effects of hydroquinone is to use natural ingredients such as breadfruit leaves. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential, chemical content, and chemical content mechanism of breadfruit leaves as anti-hyperpigmentation. The research was conducted with a literature review method using journals obtained through journal sites such as Scopus, JSTOR, Google Scholar, Sciencedirect, Springer Link, Researchgate, and ProQuest. The journals obtained are included in the inclusion criteria including journals published in the last 10 years, using Indonesian and English, and are original articles which are then reviewed and compiled into scientific papers. Based on the results of the literature review, 21 journals related to the research objectives were obtained. Breadfruit leaves have potential as an antihyperpigmentation with chemical compounds contained in them such as artocarpin, cudraflavone, tannins, stilbene, and vitamin C. and also a whitening agent by looking at the IC50 value and the non-cytotoxicity value. Key words: breadfruit leaves, hydroquinone, anti-hyperpigmentation.
