Abstract

Hesperidin is a flavonoid glycoside which has very strong antioxidant activity but very poor solubility. The approach taken to increase the solubility of hesperidin is NLC (Nanostructured Lipid Carrier) technology. Another study related to NLC is that the use of meloxicam as a topical delivery made in the NLC system is able to provide better results in overcoming solubility and directly targeting disease. This study aims to formulate and characterize NLC hesperidin, determine the effect of xanthan gum on serum physical quality and determine the best formula for serum antioxidant activity. Hesperidin NLC was prepared by sonication emulsification method. This study used solid lipid glyceryl monostearate (GMS), liquid lipid isopropyl myristate, and Tween 80 with a ratio of 6: 4: 10. The hesperidin NLC formula was characterized by observing the particle size, zeta potential, and adsorption efficiency. NLC hesperidin is formulated into serum with xanthan gum variations of 0.50%; 0.75% and 1% as gelling agents then assessed their effect on serum physical quality and tested for antioxidant activity by the DPPH method. The results of Hesperidin NLC characterization resulted in a nanoparticle size that was small, uniform, stable in the long term, and capable of absorbing very large active substances. The results of serum characterization which included organoleptic, pH, viscosity, and homogeneity produced preparations with good physical quality and quite stable. The results of the antioxidant test showed that there were differences in antioxidant activity in hesperidin, NLC hesperidin, and serum preparations which decreased their antioxidant activity after being made. The test results showed that formula 1 serum was the serum with the best physical quality. Keyword : Hesperidin, NLC, Serum, Antioxidant
