Abstract
E-cigarette smoke contain harmful chemicals, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, nickel, arsenic, nicotine and phenols which are a source of pollutants and free radicals. To counteract this we need antioxidants, one of which is bay leaves as a natural antioxidant. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo with the parameter IC50 value, repair of lung alveolar tissue, and the effective dose of bay leaf extract as an antioxidant against male mice exposed to electric cigarette smoke. The stages of the research carried out were the preparation of bay leaf extract using the in vitro DPPH test to determine the potential for antioxidants followed by in vivo tests on the test animals in group 1 normal group without treatment, group 2 negative control group was given CMC 0.5%, group 3 positive control was given Vipro G (0.52 g / Kg BW of mice), group 4 dose group I (3.5 g / Kg BW mice), group 5 dose group II (7 g / Kg BWof mice), and group 6 dose group III ( 14 g / Kg BW of mice) exposed to e-cigarette smoke. The data obtained were then tested using Kruskal Wallis and continued with Mann Whitney. The results showed that the IC50 value of bay leaf extract was 33.491 ppm, which is classified as very strong antioxidant activity. The histology shows a significant repair of lung alveolar tissue between the negative control group and the dose I and dose III groups (p <0.05). The second dose group showed a more significant improvement in alveolar tissue than the positive control group (p <0.05) so that the second dose (7 g / Kg BW of mice) was the effective dose in the study.
